THE EARLY DAYS

1906

The first known Baptists settled in Nambour, supporting the services of a small Methodist cause until a new minister disapproved of Baptists working within their church. Withdrawing graciously, they began conducting their own services in 1909, in a “dingy little room” at the rear of an auction mart in Currie Street. They used a small portable organ to accompany the singing. After a little while, the Presbyterian Church thoughtfully came to the aid of the pioneer Baptists and offered them the use of their church building one Sunday a month. They accepted this offer and worshipped with the Presby’s on other Sundays.

1910

On the 20th of July the Baptist families determined to meet for their own worship services on Sunday mornings. This is considered as the official date of formation of Nambour Baptist Church with regular morning services commencing on 8 September 1910.

1913

The property on the corner of Currie and Bury Streets was purchased at a cost of £600. There were two houses on the property, and one was converted into a meeting place. (Today this is the site of the Nambour library and Council buildings.)

THE WAR YEARS

1921

A disused church in Beaudesert was purchased for £100 and re-erected on Currie Street site, opening on 25 August.

1952

A new church was built on the Currie Street site. Men would stop on their way home from work to assist in making the bricks for the church.

This from page 12 of The Nambour Chronicle on Friday 12 September 1952:

Special Service at New Baptist Church

“The first use of the new Baptist Church Nambour, was on Wednesday evening, when, in an impromptu manner, a special praise and prayer service was conducted by the minister, Rev.C.J. Kajewski. The marked progress of the building is due to much voluntary labour by devoted members and friends. The contract price is estimated at £7,500, but by gifts presented in work and money, the cost will be considerably reduced. In the same building on Friday next, Sept. 19, a valedictory service in honour of the Church’s first overseas missionary, Mr. Ashton Lehmann, will be held, prior to his departure to North Borneo”

A FRESH START

1972

The Maroochy Shire Council purchased the Baptist property for the town library and in exchange, our current 16 acres on Coes Creek Road were purchased for a new church home. The official opening of the new facilities took place on 18 June 1977, with the manse being added in 1982.

1991

Attendance continued to grow and in 1991 a second morning service was added. During these years, “Holiday Happenings” successfully brought the Gospel to thousands of school aged children across the Sunshine Coast during the winter school break. This week-long event held in the church building and in marquees erected on the church field saw 100’s of cars lined up all along Coes Creek Road dropping children off for a creative exposure to the love of God – even using hot air balloons one year.

2001

After six years without a senior pastor, Joel and Ginny Baker came with their family from Singapore to take up the position. Following more than a year-long process of invitation and prayer, they responded finally to a dream in which the Lord gave them the map coordinates of Nambour and began their ministry at the church in February 2002.

FROM THE CHURCH AGE TO THE KINGDOM AGE

2002

“Being Precedes Doing” was the theme of the new millennium for NBC. What we do in service to the King is undeniably important, but who we are is infinitely more important than what we do.

That year the church thought to build in order to combine the two morning services and we began meeting in Nambour High’s Hungerford Hall to accommodate the increased numbers. During that time, while on a fasting retreat, Ps Joel asked the Lord, “Do you want another building? The Assembly up the hill has room for 100’s more.” The Lord’s clear response was, “I’m going to do something in three months’ time, and quickly.” Three months later, to the day – a Saturday, Hungerford Hall had a fire, and we accepted the invitation of the AOG to join them for as long as we needed.

2003

We spent five months at Hungerford Hall, and six months in joint services with the Assembly, sharing worship, the pulpit and the offerings. When the Lord released us to come “home”, it was not to put up a new building, but rather to “knock down an old wall”. Memorable Sundays were enjoyed under a roof but open to the wind and cold. With plans drawn up by Kaarlo Pesu and interiors designed by Teena Dixon, the extensive renovations were nearly complete by the end of 2004. Thanks to massive contributions from volunteers, suppliers and contractors, we were able to take the project to completion rather than in stages – miraculously spending nearly $70,000 more than could be accounted for!

In 2004, after 19 faithful years serving NBC, Associate Pastor Kerry Evans sought the Lord for his next chapter.

2009

Eight years prior we began laying a foundation of the character of a citizen of God’s Kingdom. The following year, the Lord began requiring of us all our church programs. He was teaching us to wait on Him for His timing and strategies. Three years prior we spent some time teaching on Spiritual Warfare and becoming more aware of the reality of the battle around us. All through these years God has been adding like-minded folks to our ranks, and stirring us with greater hunger, expectancy and faith. Today, we are poised on the threshold of something new.

As it unfolds, remember two things. 1) It will be messy and uncomfortable. Have grace for one another and patience. 2) All things are from Him, through Him and to Him. Any move of the Spirit belongs to Jesus; He determines times and seasons.

AND THEN WE WERE FLAMETREE

2011

While attending a conference in America, Pastor Joel Baker was given this prophetic word: “I see you as a tree over the world; every time a leaf falls off the tree a fire is started; that happens all the seasons, but in the autumn all your leaves fall off and there’s a fire all over the world.”

This confirmed what was in his heart and provided a mandate to change the name of Nambour Baptist Church to FlameTree. When this was shared with the congregation, it was received with such grace as though this had always been our name!

2012

“FlameTree Baptist Church” was confirmed by the Baptist Union as the official name of the church on 10 August 2012.

2018

In 2018, Stu White was brought on staff having been attending since 2007 with wife Renee and family.

2019

We adopted Isaiah 37:31 as our new Vision Statement:

Taking Root Downward; Bearing Fruit Upward; Extending His Kingdom Outward.

2022

This was a Sh’mitah Year in the Biblical calendar, a Year of Release for FlameTree, punctuated by our public reading of God’s Word, cover to cover, during the Feast of Tabernacles.

We were released from COVID mandates. Joel & Ginny stepped down from the Senior position after 20 years of ministry. Pastor Stu was confirmed as Senior Pastor.

After the relational challenges of the COVID era, the Lord called us to ‘bring my church back together’. Monthly after-church picnics and our first FlameTree Family Camp were immensely enjoyed.

2023

In the midst of Israel at war, increased wokeness in the West, and other birth pangs around the world, the Lord is calling His Church to prioritise prayer and to grow in the Fear of the Lord.

2024

Awakening and Discipleship. We are called to steward revival and grow in maturity through spiritual formation in the life of Jesus. Church leadership began exploring expansion possibilities for FlameTree facilities.

Prophetic Words over FlameTree

Over the years, FlameTree has received many timely words from trusted voices. These prophetic words have often been considered and used to guide where us in the direction the Lord is leading us in as a church family.

God is raising up a banner of holiness over this house to bring effectual warfare. I see this house leading as Judah would lead in praise in warfare in the region. There would be a banner of holiness that would be over this house that separate it to lead that God is desiring to raise up – a banner of holiness that would proclaim Christ’s victory over sin and enable this house in spiritual warfare as you praise and worship Him. This will bring breakthrough in your region. This house will lead in this as you lift up the banner of holiness in your worship. The shout of the King; the shout of victory will come forth from this housed.

FlameTree was seen as an “Airport Church” and an “Apostolic Hub”, indicating a lot of movement of people and ministries, in and out, with strategic Kingdom influence.

The last days harvest will need the ministry of the saints. When the harvest comes in you will be ministers to a people who have had ruined lives, ruined cities, and the devastations of many generations.

They will come home to mothers and fathers in Christ, brothers and sisters in the lord. A people who have prepared a place for them. A people who carry the heart of the Father, and they will run into Him and be safe.

FlameTree carries my heart; she has been prepared for such a time as this.

A time is coming when the storms will rage. You will say “Peace be still” and lead them beside the still waters…you will not share formulas and techniques; they are long since washed away. You will share me, and they will become intimately acquainted with me. Such are the flames of my presence that FlameTree will carry.

I saw the heart of FlameTree as strong and healthy. Any blockages to the heart have been slowly and steadily removed. FlameTree has been doing away with man-made structure and is growing stronger each day. The life is in the blood, and the blood flow to the heart of FlameTree is young and strong.

FlameTree has been under construction for some time. She has been building the Lords house that carries his heart. The building is not made of bricks and mortar. Each brick laid carries the life of the spirit, living stones. Carefully constructed in Gods timing and wisdom.

She will be known for her peace and joy, and rest in the storm. She is well acquainted with the Lord of the storm and finds her rest in him. Her gaze is fixed on him. She is not depending on her own ability, but dependant solely on Him. She rests on the arm of her beloved.
